First you need to put the words of the equation into "math". For the most part math is very literal...so we can taket he words in your example and put them direclty into "math".
Lets call the "number" x
words: math:
8 times a number 8x
plus 15 +15
is equal to =
6 times the number 6x
minus 41 -41
Lets write the math: 8x+15 = 6x-41
Now you solve it. Remember your goal is to get the X on one side and the number on the other side.
8x+15 = 6x -41
-15 -15 (subtract 15 from both sides, so we keep equation balanced)

-6X -6X (subtract 6x from both sides, so we keep equation balanced)

2x = -56 (divide by 2 on both sides)
