a man bought 4 cups of coffee and left a $7 tip a woman bought 8 cups of coffee and left a $2 tip if they paid the same amount how much was each cup of coffee

Let the cost of 1 cup of coffee be called "x".

 

Then for the man the cost was C = 4x + 7

For the woman the cost was C = 8x + 2

 

Since they each paid the same amount "C" we can set:

 

4x + 7 = 8x + 2

 

collecting terms gives:

 

8x - 4x = 7 -2 or,

 

4x = 5

 

x = 5/4 = 1.25 

 

so each cup of coffee cost $1.25
