1.) Translate word problem into math. Whenever you see "a number" write "x".
2x+6=4x+12
2.) Move the variables onto the same side. Here, I subtracted 2x from the left side and the right side.
6=2x+12
3.) Move the non-variable numbers onto the same side. Here, I substracted 12 from both sides. (note that the 6 on the left side becomes a negative 6).
-6=2x
4.) Solve by dividing both sides by 2
-3=x
