Look at what you are given:
9 more (+9)
2 times a number (2x )
> -17
So 2x +9 > -17 Solve like you would if it was an equal sign
First subtract 9 from both sides to get x alone
2x +9 -9 > -17 -9
2x > 26 divide both sides by 2
x > -13
