If we let x represent the smaller number, then an expression for the second would be x + 14
We can write the sum of the two numbers as x + x + 14
Next we get set this sum equal to 20 and solve for x:
x + x + 14 = 20
or
2x + 14 = 20
Subtract 14 from both sides of the equation:
2x + 14 - 14 = 20 -14
2x = 6
Divide both sides of the equation bt 2:
2x/2 = 6/2
x = 3 (The smaller number)
