Scholars attribute the lack of expansion from countries such as China due to the cultural and prestigious stance of the Chinese. For example, when Zheng He first discovered Africa, the Chinese did not settle because they believed Africa not to have anything that the Chinese needed or wanted. Additionally, in Chinese culture Confucian teachings were held in very high regard, and for one to leave their family in order to seek fame and prosperity was looked down upon. While with other countries it may not be the same, China's lack of imperialist expansion has been attributed to China's wealth and prestige at the time in addition to its cultural background.
