Hi Lin,
Let's look closely at what the problem is stating; THIS ONE IS A MULTI-STEP PROBLEM:
1) Minh arrives at the campsite with $146.00 in his wallet.
2) He immediately has to pay the camping fee of $36.00.
3) LET'S STOP HERE AND SUBTRACT $36.00 FROM $146.00. Minh now has $110.00 left.
4) We know that Minh wants to have MORE THAN $50.00 left for food and gas when his camping trip is finished, BUT the problem does not state exactly how much money Minh wants left; the problem just states "more than $50.00..."
5) So for right now let's just leave him with $50.01 for food and gas; that's over $50.00, right?
6) Now we need to subtract the $50.01 that he wants leftover from the $110.00 that he has right now. The answer is $59.99.
7) BUT the problem also asks "how much can he spend per day..." HE IS STAYING 6 DAYS. This means we need to divide $59.99 by 6, which is approximately $9.99 a day.
Let's check our answer by adding together all the money that Minh has spent with the money he wants leftover:
The Camp Fee: $36.00
The minimum amount Minh wants leftover: $50.01
The amount Minh spends for 6 days: $59.94
THIS ADDS UP TO $145.95
NOW SUBTRACT $145.95 FROM THE $146.00 THAT MINH ARRIVED WITH TO MAKE SURE THAT HE HAS ENOUGH MONEY FOR EVERYTHING
$146.00 - $145.95 = 5 CENTS IS LEFT OVER!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? IT MEANS THAT WE CAN ADD IT INTO MINH'S LEFTOVER "FOOD AND GAS MONEY"; NOW HE HAS $50.06 LEFTOVER!!
$145.95 + .05 = $146.00
I hope this helped!
