A birthday celebration meal is $ 42.60 including​ tax, but not the tip. Find the total cost if a 15 % tip is added to the cost of the meal.

This is a two-step problem. First, you need to determine what 15% of $42.60 is, then you add that amount to $42.50 and you'll have the final cost of the meal. $42.60 x 15% = $42.50 x .15. If you use pencil and paper to figure this out, remember add up all the decimal places in the problem (4) and make the decimal point in your answer that many places to the left. Multiplying with pencil and paper you get $42.60 x .15 21300 42600 63900. Move the decimal point four places to the left and you get $6.39 as the tip. Add $6.39 to $42.60 and you get the final cost of the meal.

To so this , first recall the percents are number out of 100, so you can write 15% as 0.15.

The tip would then be 0.15 x $42.60 or $6.39


To find the total cost including the tip, you would add the tip amount to the cost of the meal:

$6.39 + 42.60 = $48.99
