Alright, the way question is written makes the problem sound way more complicated than it really is. I don't know why they like to do that. *Sigh*.
1 - Let's call that "number" x.
The question becomes: "5 times x minus two is equal to two times x plus negative 11". A little better, right?
2 - Now, let's write it as a mathematical equation:
5x - 2 = 2x + (-11), which is the same as 5x - 2 = 2x - 11.
3 - Now, let's try to isolate x by bringing the "2x" to the left, and the "-2" to the right. Remember, their signs change when they move from one side to the other:
5x - 2x = - 11 + 2
3x = -9, after simplification;
x = -3, after dividing both sides by 3.
There's your "number"! x = -3 !
