Suppose the first number is represented by x and the second number is represented by y. Since the second is three times as large as the first number, y = 3x. Also, since the sum of the two numbers is 64, 3x + x = 64.
4x = 64
x =16 (first number)
y = 3(16) = 48.
Therefore, the first number is 16 and the second number is 48.
