There are two ways to solve this problem.
The first way is to find the sales tax by multiplying the tax by the price of the shirt and adding it to the price of the shirt. Let's say our shirt is $5 and our sales tax is 6%. This is how we would solve:
5 * .06 = .30 So our sales tax is $.30. We add this to the sale price to find the total cost:
$5 + $.30 = $5.30
The second way is to think about the problem a little differently. We are paying 100% of the $5 sales price PLUS an additional 6% in tax. A shortcut would be to say we are actually paying 106% of the price of the shirt. Multiply 106% by the sales price to find the total price:
$5 * 1.06 = $5.30
