Shoguns themselves in East Asian history were the rich, ruling class, according to the author, James Clavell. It only follows then that their castles be an integral part of the story of Nippon, As they were in Clavell's Hong Kong. Like feudal Europe where every estate had a mansion, or manor house, Japan also had its lord's and ladies of the manor who oversaw the peasants and collected tribute from them, with a promise to protect them.
