Literal equations

12. A=b+c/d solve for b

Edythe C.

Edythe Cox says, "Solve for b" means get b alone on one side of the equation. In this problem that involves getting "+c/d" on the other side of the equation. We do that by doing the opposite of the "+" which is "-" and we subtract c/d from both sides of the equation. c/d minus c/d wipes away c/d from the right side, and on the left we get A - c/d. That's what b equals!
