Using the stem and leaf plot, find the min, max, and mode?

The minimum value will always be the made from the smallest stem followed by the smallest leaf in the same row as the stem.

 

In this case, 1 is the smallest stem and 2 is the smallest leaf out of 2,4, or 8. Therefore the min is 12.

 

The maximum value will always be made from the largest stem followed by the largest leaf in the same row as the stem.

 

In this case, 3 is the largest stem and 5 is the largest leaf out of 2 or 5.

 

The mode is the most frequent number. The easiest way to find the mode is to look at each row of leaves. Within each row see if there any numbers that repeat.

 

row 1:     2,4,8   no values repeat

row 2:     3,3,5   3 is repeated twice

row 3:     2,5     no values repeat

 

In this case, the 3 in row 2 is repeated, since it is the only number that is repeated, it is the mode. Now attach the stem that goes with the leaf. The mode is 23
