Parallel lines have the same slope. The slope of the line y = (1/2)x + 5 is 1/2. Next put the given point into the equation to find the constant or y- intercept. -3 = (1/2) 4 + b
Multiplying : -3 = 2 + b
Subtract 2 from each side: -5 = b
New equation: y = (1/2) x -5 for the parallel line going through point 4 , -3
