Two quantities x and y are directly proportional if for some constant (fixed number) k they are related in the following equivalent ways:
y / x = k
The ratio of y to x is constant (k)
y = kx
y is a constant (k) times x
To find out whether area of a rectangle and its length are directly proportional, first write down the formula that gives the area A in terms of the width w and length l. Then plug in the given width w = 24.
A = wl
The area equals the width times the length. Plug in w = 24
A = 24l
Now compare the equation to the direct proportion relationship y = kx to see they are in the same form.
y = kx
y is a constant (k) times x
A = 24l
area A is a constant (24) times length l
For this rectangle, the area and length are directly proportional.
