Ten is subtracted from twice some number and the result is the sum of the number and 2
Twice some number=2n
Ten is subtracted from twice some number: 2n-10
Result means the equal sign
Sum of the number and 2=2+n
Put it all together (except for the first 2n, that was used to find the second part).
2n-10=2+n
You first need to get your like terms on the same side. I personally don't like to deal with a negative variable because it can lead to an extra step on the end. Therefore I will take the n on the right side and move it to the 2n on the left side.
2n-10=2+n
-n -n
n-10=2
Now you need to move the -10 to the other side of the equal sign.
n-10=2
+10 +10
n=12
To make sure that is correct plug the 12 into the original equation.
2(12)-10=2+(12)
24-10=2+12
14=14
It is correct.
