To translate this into an equation take it one piece at a time.
4 times → 4×
4 times what?
the sum of 2 and a number 'n' → 2+n ( because sum means addition)
Now it's 4 times all of 2+n, so we need some parenthesis, or else the meaning of the equation is changed. This gives us:
4×(2+n)
or you can also write it without the times symbol, it means the same thing:
4(2+n)
If you need to solve this further, distribute the 4 into the parenthesis:
4 × 2 + 4 × n
or
8 + 4n
