Reading history critically means reading with the awareness that the author has their own point of view, a bias one way or the other. There's a saying: "History books are written by the winners." For example, imagine a US army report on the effect of dropping the atom bomb on Hiroshima. Compare that with the memoirs of a Japanese doctor who dealt with the aftermath. I have read both and granted these are extremes but illustrate the point quite clearly.
