Let x be the number of white socks and y be the number of black socks. Since the total number of socks is 74, we can write the equation
x + y = 74.
We're also told Tim has 1 more pair of white socks than black socks, which can be written algebraically as
x = y + 2.
Now you can solve this system of equations quite easily by substitution to find the answer:
x = 38 white socks
y = 36 black socks
