On a standard number line, zero is in the middle, positive numbers are to the right, and negative numbers are to the left. Place your finger at zero and slide it slowly to the left. Is your finger only touching integers? You might think so, but in order to go directly from 0 to -1 you would have to lift your finger off the page and place it down on -1. When you slide your finger along the number line, you are touching a lot of other numbers, and since they are to the left of 0, they are negative. I think that should help you see the difference between negative numbers and integers and what is wrong with Katie's statement.
