Knowledge is power
Victorian literature is characterized by the struggles, progress, and triumph of the working class during the industrialization of England. Notable authors of the time include Charles Dickens, the Bronte Sisters, Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley, all of whose works are still studied today. Their narratives and characters were at the forefront of modern storytelling as they faced expanding technology and political and social changes. The stories of the Victorian literary era are full of universal themes that modern readers can still connect with, such as finding a purpose, or a place in the world, seeking love, understanding technology and science, feeling nostalgic for a time gone by, and finding happiness in an ever-developing world.
The era was dominated by novels, which is still true in today's literary canon, and female authors were just as prevalent as their male counterparts. Genres spanned romance, fantasy, science fiction, and even new stories just for children to read. Because the Victorian Era was so long, Victorian literature spans over six decades, and it's influence can't be contained to just a few works. It was a defining time in the literary world, and has shaped the way we view modern literature.
