Price for Kelly's Cabbies = $K
Price for Uber = $U
$K = $6 + $0.50 m
$U = $0.80 m
Set $K = $U to find the distance in miles, m, where the price of using either service is equal.
$6 + $0.50 m = $0.80 m
$6 = $0.30 m
m = $6 / $0.30
m = 20 miles
Let m = any value less than 20 miles now. Use m = 5 miles.
Then $K = $6 + $0.50 * 5 = $ 8.50
and $U = $0.80 * 5 = $ 4.00
So Uber is cheaper for trips under 20 miles.
Just to be sure, now Let m = any value greater than 20 miles now. Use m = 30 miles.
Then $K = $6 + $0.50 * 30 = $ 21.00
and $U = $0.80 * 30 = $24.00
So Kelly's Cabbies is cheaper for trips over 20 miles.
Sorry, I have never found a way to paste a graph into Wyzant Ask an Expert. If you send me a message, I will plot one in Excel and send it to you. When you plot the two lines, the intersection should be at m = 20 miles. This will save you from having to calculate it and it would also be visually apparent which service to use for trips under and over 20 miles.
