The answer to the following: 2-2x2+2 =?

I said -4 and I have a co worker saying it is 0. We are both using the PEMDAS method of course, but how we work it at the end is where the issue comes into play. May I get some assistance please?

Stan B.

Using PEMDAS as a guide, here are the steps: 2-2×2+2 = 1st mult 2×2 leaving 1) 2-4+2 = 2nd sub 2-4 leaving 2) -2+2 = 3rd -2 + 2 = 0 3) (0)

Okay so unlike multiplication and division where it's in that order, with addition and subtraction it's left to right and whatever comes first?

It's not multiplication and division "in that order"--it's multiplication and division together as the operations occur from left to right.

Okay so you work it left to right based on which operation is first?

Yes. Parentheses and exponents first, then multiplications and divisions, and then additions and subtractions.

My answer is correct. Try entering the expression (as written) on a scientific or graphing calculator. The answer is zero.
