4x+1/3 = x-5/2 the 4x and the 1 are on top of the equation and x-5 is on top of the 2 in the equatio

So, if

(4x + 1)/3 = (x - 5)/2 then 2(4x + 1) = 3(x - 5) or 8x + 2 = 3x - 15

or 5x = -17 and x = -17/5

But if 4x + 1/3 = (x - 5)/2 then 8x + 2/3 = x - 5 or 7x = -17/3

and x = -17/21

Cross multiply to obtain: 3(x - 5) = 2(4x + 1)

3x - 15 = 8x + 2

5x = -17

x = -17/5 = -3.4
