WIth algebraic expressions, you have to dissect the expression. 10 more than means you are adding 10 to something.
Quotient of a number and 3= N/3 it is telling you what you have around the function.
Is just means =
10+ (N/3)= 12 You could also write it as N/3 +10 =12. You don't have to have the paranthesis, I just prefer to use them.
If you are solving it, you will want to have the variable on one side, and all numbers on the other. So you would take the opposite of 10 and move it with the 12. You take the opposite because you have to be able to cross it out on the left side. 12-10=2
N/3=2
Next you have to get the N by itself. Because the N is dividing the 3, you take the opposite function-which is to multiple, and then multiple 3 by both sides in order to keep the equation equal.
3*2=6, N=6
To check your work, plug 6 in for N in the original equation. 6/3+10=12
2+10=12
12=12
