Adrianne is making muffins. she was asked to make half as many chocolate muffins as raisin muffins. and 3 times as many strawberry muffins as chocolate muffins. she only had enough ingredients to bake 480 muffins. how many raisin muffins can she bake?

As always, read the last question and introduce unknown variable to be found:

Let X be a number of Raisin muffins

Then read the problem sentence by sentence from the beginning, making equations, or part of the equations.

First sentence - half as many chocolate muffins - mean X/2.

Next sentence - 3x strawberry as chocolate - means 3*(X/2)

Next sentence - all togeter 480 - means X+X/2+3*X/2=480

That is your equation. Now solve it:

3X=480

X=160

Adrianne can bake 480 muffins. She can make twice as many raisin muffins as chocolate and 3 times as many strawberry as chocolate.

Let C represent Chocolate muffins, R Raisin muffins and S Starwberry muffins

C+R+S = 480 (1)

R = 2C and S = 3C

(1) can be rewritten as C+2C+3C = 480.

Simplifying we get 6C=480, or C = 80 Chocolate muffins

R=2C = 160 Raisin Muffins

S=3C = 240 Strawberry muffins.

Note 80+160+240 = 480.
