The average number of points a basketball team scored for three games was 63 points. In the first two games they scored the same number of points which was 6 points more than they scored in the third game. Write and solve an equation to find the number of points the team scored in each game.

Let x be the number of points they scored in the first two games. The problem says they scored in the third game x-6 points (six less than the first two games). The problem says the total for the three games was 63, so

x + x + (x-6) = 63

Simplify to 3x-6 = 63

Add six to both sides to get 3x = 69

Divide both sides by 3 to get x=23

Therefore, they scored 23, 23 and 17 points, respectively, in the three games

Let F = the points scored in each of the First 2 games and T the points in the Third game

F=T+6

and

F + F + T = 3(63)

Substitute

2(T+6) + T = 189

3T+12=189

3T = 177
