Algebraic Expressions uses words in place of numbers and symbols.
2 times g is probably the easiest to see: 2g.
8 less than 2g. It doesn't mean the inequality 8<2g, it means 8 is less than another number or a product minus 8
You do enough of them and you will start to see a pattern. When you put it into numbers, it doesn't mean that the way you write it is the same way as the way it is written in the expression.
I hope that makes sense. But when you say the words out loud, "8 less than2 times a number" say it out loud, and see what stands out. You pick up more when you read it out loud than when you read it silently. But you are saying you are taking away 8 from whatever it is asking you, in this case 2g.
