Let L, P and W represent the Length, Perimeter and Width of the rectangle.
P = 2L + 2W (1) and P = 52 in.
L = W + 6 (2)
Substitute (2) into (1) to find
P = 52 = 2(W + 6) + 2W
Expand and solve for W
52 = 2W + 12 + 2W = 4W + 12
Subtract 12 from both sides and then divide both sides by 4
40 = 4W ==> 40/4 = 10 = W
From (2) it is seen that L = 10 + 6 = 16
Check: 2L + 2W = 2(16) + 2(10) = 32 + 20 = 52 = P
