A dilation is a multiplication of a figure. If the dilation center is 0,0 then the factor can be multiplied by each part of the x,y part of each point to obtain the new point. Thus a scale factor of 2 on the point (-3,5) would give a new point of (-6,10) and a scale factor of 0.5 on the same point would give (-1.5,2.5). A scale factor greater than 1 produces an enlargement and a scale factor between 0 and 1 produces a smaller figure. A negative scale factor would produce a figure reflected across the origin from the original.
