Appointed as or just "appointed"?

Is it more correct to say>a) John was appointed as manager of ACME.or>b) John was appointed manager of ACME.Or are they interchangeable?

They're both fine. Appointed is less wordy than appointed as and it helps make writing easier to understand if it's more succinct.
