How can one be confident about using "farther" and "further" without mixing them up?

The easiest way is to thing of "far" as physical distance; use "farther" in those cases. For other uses "further" is correct.

Ex. 1: Pluto is farther from the earth than the moon (earth's moon, of course).

Ex 2: My other brother went further in school.
