Protein does not actually build bone. Protein can help support bone but bone itself is built by two different types of cells called osteo - clasts and osteo - blasts. You have probably heard about Vitamin D and Calcium being the typical reference for Bone health and thats true. Proteins main function for your body is growth though and its mainly for skeletal muscle which would be one in the same. When you think lean mass you think muscle and when you work out you would be consuming lean meat and whey/ protein. Protein helps increase mass/ bone mineral density which increases the mineral density which hardens the muscle/ builds bones. So to answer the question the protein indirectly builds bones....Weightlifting or another stimulus increases the demand to cause our bodies to increase the density of our bones and protein helps build musuclar mass which is another property of our bones which proportionately gives us this advantage of bone growth.
