Very broad question. An engine creates mechanical energy. A Heat Engine uses heat as the input to an engine that creates mechanical engine. There's usually a transfer medium, A steam engine uses heat to turn water into steam, which drives the pistons that drive the engines. As the steam cools, the engine slows down.
