you are releasing gas, its essentially nitrogen and synovial fluid but there isn't any concrete data that is suggesting it can form long term arthritic pains. The bones themselves, in your cervical spine, will be ok that is. If you have any preexisting conditions however they will not likely worsen or become better because of the "cracking." Most people find the temporary relief from it nice through. The negative side effects are all in the practical "whipping" of the individual which is often ballistic if someone is too quick they can pull a muscle or cause inflammation because they crack too fast. This is often only temporary and nothing that isnt dissimilar to when you crack your toes or back.
