There are 3 inner ears bone: the malleus, incus, and stapes. The reason we have them is to amplify sound waves that hit our ear drum, aka tympanic membrane. The bones also connect our ear drum to the inner ear, so all of the sound vibrations go to the ear drum -> inner ear bones -> inner ear.
We don't break them all the time because they are flexible (bones are really strong for their weight) and strong. But it is possible to damage them through loud music or blunt force trauma.
