The Sudbury impact crater located in Sudbury, Canada, is a great example of an impact crater that is economically beneficial. This impact occurred 1.85 billion years ago. The original width of the impact crater was probably around 250 km in diameter, however later mountain building events squished this crater into a smaller diameter of 130 km. This impact was so large and powerful that it melted a large portion of the ground it impacted. This large portion of melted rock became a large igneous complex and slowly cooled as an igneous body would. During cooling, ores enriched in nickel, copper, gold, platinum, and palladium were produced. These have been extensively mined and now Subdury is a large mining community.
