What are two different types of statistics used by psychologists?

Know two psychologists, one a with B.S. and another about to get her PhD. From the best of my knowledge neither one uses statistics. There is linear regression, where try to establish a correlation between two variables. Then there is normal distribution that is used to find the probability of some events. Normal distribution is used by the medical profession to determine whether an event is due to a cause or just random chance. If the random chance is five percent or less (2 sigma) results are considered good. Physicists require 5 sigma before they call it good. They consider 3 sigma as interesting and worthy of additional research.
