In this problem two points were giving ( -5, -2) and ( 3, 14). = ( X1, Y1) , (X2, Y2).
Y2 -Y1
1. Let find the slope of the line m = -----------------=. 14- (-2). /. 3- (-5). = 14+2/3+5 = 16/8 =2
X2-X1
2. m=2. The equation of the line in slope -intercept form is y = mx+b
3. b=? you need to find b, knowing that m=2, y= -2 and x= -5, let substitute in y = mx+b
4 -2 = 2(-5) +b
-2 = -10 +b Adding +10 in both sides we get 8=b
Therefore the answer is y= 2x +8
Note: To check your answer ,you can graph ( using ti-84) the equation y= 2 x+8, press 2nd graph and notice a table that has the points ( -5,-2) and (3,14).
looks like this:
x. y
-5. -2
-4. 0
-3. 2
-2. 4
-1. 6
0. 8
1. 10
2 12
3. 14
