In Thai grammar, when making superlatives, what function does the ที่ before the adjective have?

First, you need to understand the function of ที่ in a sentence.

We use ที่ têe to combine two phrases/sentences to make a compound sentence. It is the same as in English when we use the words “that, where, who” to combine phrases/sentences. ที่ têe is used to refer to a noun from the first sentence or phrase. However, a noun that it refers to can be omitted.

Noun+ ที่ têe+ phrase 1/ sentence 1 + phrase 2/sentence 2

phrase 1/ sentence 1 + ที่ têe + phrase 2/sentence 2

ทะเลที่พวกเราไปเมื่อปีที่แล้วสวยมาก

tá-lay têe pûak rao bpai mêua bpee-têe-láew-sŭay mâak

The beach that we went last year is very beautiful.

พ่อแม่พวกเราขายบ้านที่พวกเราอยู่ตอนเป็นเด็กแล้ว

pôr mâe pûak rao kăai bâan têe pûak rao yòo dton bpen dèk láew

Parents sold the house that we lived when we were young.

บ้านสีแดงที่พวกเราไปเมื่อวานนี้ขายไปแล้ว

bâan-sĕe-daeng têe pûak rao bpai mêua waan née kăai bpai láew

The red house that we went yesterday is sold already.

ผู้ชายที่ฉันรักเป็นคนดีมาก

pôo chaai têe chăn rák bpen kon-dee-mâak

The man whom I love is a very good person.

เธอไม่ได้ฟัง(เรื่อง)ที่ฉันพูดเลยใช่ไหม

ter mâi dâai fang (rêuang) têe chăn pôot loie châi măi

You didn't listen to anything that I said at all, right?

So, for the superlative sentence, if you put ที่ têe in front of an adjective, it is simply added there to refer to a noun that has been mentioned. For examples;

เขาเป็นคนที่สวยที่สุด

kăo bpen kon têe sŭay têe sùt 

She is the person who is the most beautiful.

หมาตัวนี้เป็นหมาที่ฉันรักที่สุด

măa-dtua-née bpen măa têe chăn rák têe sùt 

This dog is the dog that I love the most.

ขั้วโลกใต้เป็นสถานที่ที่หนาวที่สุด

kûa lôhk dtâi bpen sà-tăan têe têe năao têe sùt

The south pole is the place that is coldest.
