In this type of problem, you can write algebraic expressions to represent each quantity that is equal to the other, and then place an equal sign so that there is an equation to solve. Just make sure that the "number" on each side is represented by the same variable, because it is standing for the same number each time.
"Eight times a number": If the "number is n, the the expression is 8*n, or just 8n.
"42 more than the number": n + 42
Since the two expressions are equal, then you can write and solve the two-step equation: 8n = n + 42
Once you solve for a value of n, you should plug that back in to both sides to make sure that they are, in fact, equal. Hope this helps!
