Dan left the city travelling at 74 mph, while at the same time, Mary left the city travelling 90 mph in the opposite direction. Find the time Dan traveled before the 2 were 185 miles apart.

Since they are heading in OPPOSITE directions, you can add the times together.

Total speed = 74mph + 90mph = 164mph

Distance = speed * time

Distance / speed = time

185 miles / 164 miles/hour = 1.128 hours = 67.683 minutes
