y=n-15
Y is your unknown variable. n is some number. That means a number that you can choose depending on other factors.
if n is between 0 and 100, like in a test score, and the teacher thinks that all the students did too well, the teacher may decide to take away 15 points to each student. Let's say your grade was originally 85. Now, the adjusted number is n=85-15. Your new grade is 60.
Another case. All the subjects in a weight loss program lost 15 pounds. You were one of them. You started the program at 160 lb. What is your new weight? n=165-15.That means your new weight is 150 lb.
Can you estimate the new weight of someone who started the program at 100 lb.? just do it, n=y-15.
