This depends on the region. If you were traveling in South and Central America, speaking Spanish is indispensable, except for Brazil, of course, where Portuguese is spoken. However, if you were traveling in Central and Eastern Europe, German and French could also prove useful. As for Asia and Africa, there is no pan-Asian/ pan-African language; English is probably your best chance to communicate there.
