Explain why the remainder upon dividing a polynomial P(x) by x-α has a degree of zero.

The question asked why the DEGREE of the remainder was zero!
If the degree of the remainder is 0, that means the remainder is a constant so the the dividend must have been of degree 1, something like
2x-5/(x-a) = 2 + R where R=2a-5
