Distributive property just means you take the number out front and multiply it by each number in the parenthesis
5(12-5)
5 x 12 = 60
5 x 5 = 25
So using distributive property this same expression would be 60 - 25

The distributive property of multiplication over subtraction states that the product of a number and the difference of two other numbers is equal to the difference of the products:
a(b-c) = ab - ac
Re-write: 5(12-5)
5*12 - 5*5
