Whether or not complexity or simplicity works more efficiently in writing and speaking is entirely subjective, and, of course, depends deeply on the context. It isn't necessarily that I believe one is more important than the other, but more "complex" language can serve as a detriment to the reader or listener. While "complex" language can exude intelligence, it does put up barriers for those who don't understand what you're talking about. A balance of considerably harder and easier words can work. Too ornate language can risk making your prose sound "purple," i.e., too elaborate to the point where it's difficult for a reader to understand. There are pros and cons for both arguments!
