Here's a general rule which might be helpful. When "spoken" is used as an adjective it describes a thing. When "speaking" is used similarly, it is used to describe a person, e.g. "a French speaking person." However, you can also use "spoken" with a person, e.g. "He is well spoken of" (i.e. he is well respected).
