It's also called "combination"---and maybe a few other things. The idea is to modify one of the equations so that, when the equations are either added or subtracted, one of the variables is removed, This allows you to solve for the other variable.
Simple example:
#1: x + 2y = 3
#2: 3x + 9y = 27
multiply #1 by 3 to get:
#3: 3x + 6y = 9
then, subtract #3 from #2:
#4: 3y = 18
So y = 6
Finally, plug in 6 for y in either equation, and solve for x
